These sourdough discard poptarts are such a delight and so easy to make. Have them with breakfast, afternoon tea or a night time treat!
Don't worry I'll get right to the point. First here's a few notes to help you through the recipe.
1. Definitely use cold butter. I know this feels like a pain in the butt , however I found a way to make it easy! Go ahead and get yourself a rotary cheese grater. But Ashley, that's for cheese... I know I know. TRUST ME. I use this thing for loads of stuff in the kitchen aside from cheese! Put your tablespoons of butter in the top, push the topper down and spin. Then you'll have small shreds of butter. This will make incorporating your butter and flour together so much easier. Here's a link to the Food Grater I got off of Amazon.
2. Roll your dough out thinner to achieve "poptart" results. I left mine a little thicker and they were more like "toaster struddle" results. Both are delicious, one is more pastry like and the other is crunchier so whatever your preference is! This will also change how many you get out of your dough.
3. Lastly, you can make the icing however you want! I personally love cream cheese icing, if you aren't a fan just skip it. The icing I made is a bit thicker because of the cream cheese. If you choose to do without it will be more like a glaze. Either way, you'll want your poptarts to cool before adding the icing or it will melt all over the place.
4. Have fun with the shapes and designs. These are great for all times of year but loved the hearts and red strawberry jam for Valentine's day!
